Sydney Thunder import Eoin Morgan can scarcely believe he’s joined a team that hasn’t won a match in 725 days.
And no, it’s not England either.
Back-to-back Big Bash wooden spooners the Thunder may be, but Morgan says you wouldn’t know it.
“I’ve been very impressed with their setup,” said the Irish-born England international, who linked up with the Thunder nine days ago.
“There’s been quite a big change in personnel – some new signings.
“And I think it’s been for the better.
“I’ve been very impressed with the way the guys have trained and the attitude they’ve shown towards turning things around and winning as opposed to anything else.”
The last time the Thunder were able to bask in a T20 victory was December 23, 2011 – when they triumphed at home against the Adelaide Strikers.
On that occasion a magnificent century to marquee man Chris Gayle secured them a memorable win.
But Gayle, and his enormous salary, is gone – allowing for a more balanced lineup that has the Thunder believing they can make a major impact on the league this year.
Their top runscorer, Usman Khawaja, returns at the top of the order where he will be joined by former Test star Mike Hussey, Morgan and young NSW batsman Ryan Carters.
Morgan believes it’s a winning combination.
“I think we’ve a reasonably strong group of players,” he said.
“Things are quite balance-based across the team which is obviously key because you can’t really depend on one or two players.
“…It’s up to us as senior players.
“…If we can set the standard or lead the way it will be a huge key factor in us having a successful tournament.”
Despite England’s miserable defence of the Ashes, Morgan said there would be no thoughts of redemption from the influx of English imports throughout the BBL this year.
But the 27-year-old, a limited-overs mainstay who played the last of his 16 Tests in February 2012, hasn’t given up hope of reviving his Test career.
“I’d love to get back into the Test team,” he said.
“The only way I’m going to get back in is by weight of runs in any form of the game.
“I’ll be looking to pile on the runs.”
