Kyrgios set for Aust Open wildcard

Wunderkind Nick Kyrgios’ rapid rise through the ranks of world tennis seems certain to land him an Australian Open wildcard next month.

Capping off a stellar year by becoming the first player to hit up on the new $160 million Margaret Court Arena, Kyrgios allowed modesty to get in the way of the safest presumption in the game.

“Nothing’s guaranteed,” he said.

“But if I’m fortunate enough to get one, I’ll take it with my arms wide open and I’ll give it all I’ve got.”

Others, like Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley and doubles legend Todd Woodbridge, were more candid.

“He’s one of the best we’ve had for some time,” Woodbridge said.

“I think it’s pretty obvious he deserves it. He’s won a round at the French Open) and qualified at the US Open, the only 18-year-old to do that.”

Tiley seemed almost bemused to be asked whether Kyrgios would be given a walk-up start to his home grand slam.

“He’s one of our superstars and had the biggest and most substantial rise through the world rankings of any player,” Tiley said of the world No.182.

“Depending on what he does in the lead-in, he’ll be a good chance for a wildcard. You can make that assumption.”

Kyrgios won the Australian Open junior title in January, becoming the No.1 junior in the world and winning his first Challenger title at age 17.

Kyrgios also notched a first-round win over Radek Stepanek at the French Open before finishing the year by helping Australia beat Poland to return to the World Group of the Davis Cup.

Is Kyrgios living the dream?

“Yeah definitely. I never thought I’d be playing Davis Cup next to Lleyton Hewitt but that’s come really quick and it’s a moment I’ll always treasure,” he said.

Kyrgios isn’t about to set limits on what 2014 could hold after his breakout year.

“There’s a lot of expectation but you know that’s motivation to keep on going,” he said.

“To have the likes of Rafter, Hewitt, Woodbridge all there giving me advice, it’s exciting to keep going and see what you can do in the sport.”
