Roger Federer will be vying to set up the first all-Swiss grand slam final when he faces world No.1 Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open semi-finals on Friday night.

Countryman Stanislas Wawrinka earned his first appearance in a major final when he downed Czech Tomas Berdych on Thursday night.

Federer is aiming to reach his 25th and give himself a shot at an 18th grand slam title.

To do so, he will have to break a four-match losing streak against Nadal.

The Swiss took just one set off the Spaniard in their four meetings last year.

Nadal has also won the past five grand slam meetings with his great rival.

Four of those were in finals, with their most recent clash in a major coming in an Australian Open semi-final two years ago.

Federer will take some confidence into the match after his impressive dismissals of quality opponents Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray in the past two rounds.

But Nadal, who missed last year’s Open with a knee injury, has also been in strong form.

Earlier on Friday, several Australians will be in action.

Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden will meet India’s Sania Mirza and Romania’s Horia Tecau in a mixed doubles semi-final.

Australia’s Bradley Mousley and Kimberly Birrell will compete in boys’ and girls’ singles semi-finals respectively.

Mousley will also partner Austria’s Lucas Miedler in the boys’ doubles final.

In women’s doubles, Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, who beat Australia’s Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua in last year’s final, will seek to defend their title when they take on Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in this year’s decider.
