Ablett focused on AFL finals, not future

Geelong veteran Gary Ablett says he is focused on the Cats’ AFL finals campaign rather than making a decision on his future.

The 35-year-old has enjoyed a strong year but said he wasn’t thinking about whether he would play on in 2020.

“(It’s) not something that I’m thinking about too much,” Ablett said on Wednesday.

“My focus this year was about hopefully playing some finals footy and having a crack at the premiership and it’ll be something that at the end of the year, I’ll sit down with the club and we’ll work out what next year looks like.

“But I’m excited about about getting into the finals.

“You know, we’ve had a fantastic year and we’ve put ourselves in a really good position.

“So we need to make sure that we go perform now.”

Ablett wouldn’t be drawn on whether Geelong potentially winning this year’s flag would affect his decision, emphasising the call would be made at season’s end.

“I’m just focused on this week and we’ll have some conversations at the end of the season, and I’ll see how I’m feeling and also what direction the club’s heading in and we’ll make a decision then,” he said.

Ablett was expected to be managed throughout the course of the season but has played 21 of 22 games and earned selection in the All Australian 40-man squad.

“The focus for me going into pre-season was just getting my body right … sitting down with the doctors and physios and just working through what I needed to do to to get healthy,” he said.

“I had a lot of little niggles last year and wasn’t able to play the the level of football that I would have liked.

“So I knew that if I was able to get my body right … footy IQ’s not something you lose, so I’m really happy that I’ve been able to get out and play 21 games and hopefully plenty more.”
