Adam Goodes keen to play: Longmire

Sydney coach John Longmire expects Adam Goodes to put his hand up to return in Saturday night’s AFL semi-final against Carlton, but he won’t make a final call until Thursday.

Goodes has been sidelined since injuring his knee in the Swans’ round 13 clash with Port Adelaide on June 13.

The dual Brownlow Medallist has been restricted to light running in recent weeks, but on Sunday trained well for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic surgery in July.

“He’ll be putting pressure on us I’d imagine. Whether we pick him or not, I’m not too sure,” Longmire said on Monday in the wake of the Swans’ 54-point qualifying final loss to Hawthorn.

“He’s always confident in his ability to play, whether it’s with one knee or an arm tied behind his back.

“He’s always willing to get out there and have a go, and that’s what you admire about him.

“We’ll sit down with him after he’s trained both times this week (on Tuesday and Thursday) and have a mature discussion about it.”

The 33-year-old Goodes may be convinced he’s ready for the rigours of a sudden-death final, but Longmire seemed a little more cautious ahead of Saturday night’s ANZ Stadium clash with the Blues.

“If he trains well this week, that’s obviously a good thing. But there’s no guarantee he’ll be picked,” Longmire said.

“It depends on a whole host of reasons and we’ll discuss it later in the week.”

Longmire said the club would decide after Thursday morning’s SCG training session whether Goodes would be worth taking a risk on.

“He hasn’t done a lot of training, he hasn’t obviously played for a long time,” he said.

“But we also know he’s a pretty special player and a mentally tough person.”

Longmire brought Lewis Jetta back for last Friday night’s qualifying final against the Hawks, but the speedster struggled to make an impact in his first AFL match since injuring his shin in round 10.
