A post-siren fist fight at the MCG season opener is likely to earn the brawlers an AFL ban.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the ground on Thursday night following Richmond’s 33-point victory over Carlton.

Footage of the brawl shows at least six men, one wearing a Tigers guernsey, throwing punches in the seats as dozens of shocked patrons watch on.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan labelled the incident “incredibly disappointing” and “completely unacceptable” while flagging the league’s intention to take action.

“We have provisions to ban individuals like that from the football,” he said.

“It’s totally unacceptable behaviour and people need to be held accountable. Every single person (should) feel safe at the football.

“That individual or individuals are unlikely to be able to go to the football for a while.”

The brawl comes after a spate of violent crowd incidents inside the MCG, Adelaide Oval, GMHBA Stadium and Etihad Stadium at AFL matches last season.

McLachlan insisted the incidents were isolated and becoming less prevalent statistically.

“Generally our games are very safe, very inclusive,” he said.

McLachlan has contacted Richmond CEO Brendon Gale and said the AFL will continue to work with the Tigers as well as Victoria Police.

With no security in sight when the fracas started, McLachlan has asked Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox for a ‘please explain’.

McLachlan was told security had been pushed back as the 85,016-strong crowd filed out of the stadium.

“That’s obviously contributory … but we need to make sure we learn from this,,” he said.

The MCC said security staff and police arrived on the scene within a minute of the fight breaking out.

“We want all patrons to feel safe coming to a game of footy,” MCC general manager of venue and event services Gerard Griffin said.

“Our security team will work closely with Victoria Police to quickly apprehend anyone who engages in anti-social behaviour and they will be appropriately dealt with.”

The Eltham man, thought to be the Tigers fan, was fined $322 for riotous behaviour.

Parties chose not to proceed with further police action.
