AFL coaches never more vulnerable: Cameron

GWS Giants coach Leon Cameron admits being a senior AFL coach has never been a more volatile occupation in the wake of three mid-season sackings in 2019.

North Melbourne’s Brad Scott, St Kilda’s Alan Richardson, and Carlton’s Brendon Bolton all parted ways with their clubs before round 18 this season.

Cameron has enjoyed a 54 per cent winning record since joining the Giants for his first senior coaching role in 2014 and said he knows he’ll likely face the sack one day.

But the 46-year-old, who has taken GWS to the finals for the past three years, said that was simply part of coaching at the professional level.

“People want results straight away and there can be impatient boards or impatient people or impatient supporters. That’s the life of the AFL senior coach and when you sign up for it, that’s part of the territory,” Leon told Fox Footy.

“You know you’re either going to get hired or fired one day, so I understand there’s lots of speculation about that but if you actually look at a lot of these stories that break on coaches, some of them, all of a sudden a month later are tipped as the greatest thing ever.

“We understand it fluctuates on win-loss and it has been interesting this year because last year I don’t think there was any coach changes.

“So you’re looking for more stability from every footy club but it is the industry, that’s the way it is. It’s one of those things that unfortunately a coach probably bears the brunt of when you are losing.”

Caretaker coaches Rhyce Shaw (North Melbourne), Brett Ratten (St Kilda) and David Teague (Carlton) have all been tipped to get the roles full-time after leading impressive turnarounds.
