Greater Western Sydney have opted for players at opposite ends of the experience spectrum for their inaugural leadership group, with veterans Luke Power and youngsters Phil Davis and Callan Ward named co-captains.
“These guys are very dedicated and that’s the type of player and leadership we want,” Giants’ coach Kevin Sheedy told reporters on Tuesday.
Sheedy revealed he had learnt from the successful co-captaincy structure employed by his club’s crosstown rivals, the Sydney Swans.
“Sometimes you look at what somebody has done very well and you should learn from that lesson,” Sheedy said.
“I think to me they’ve set up a very strong footy club, the character of the Swans’ group, so that’s something we had to learn pretty quickly about Sydney.”
Three-time Brisbane premiership player Power, 32, announced his retirement last year, but was coaxed back into playing by the Giants.
“I’m not the age demographic that you usually associate with captains, but it’s a role I’m honoured to take on,” Power said.
The All Australian and International Rules representative amassed 282 games and 226 goals for Brisbane in a stellar career stretching back to 1998.
Ward, 21, was recruited from Western Bulldogs, where he played 60 games since making his senior debut in the 2008 campaign.
“I guess I’ve always had aspirations to be a leader of a football club and I think it’s every kid’s dream come true to captain a football club,” Ward said.
Canberra-born defender Davis, 21, has played just 18 senior games for Adelaide.
“It’s a huge honour, one I feel extremely proud of and I feel truly privileged and humbled to get this opportunity,” Davies said.
The leadership group will also include Tom Scully, Rhys Palmer, Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan and Setanta O’hAilpin.
