AFL great Lewis about to join retirees

Four-time premiership player Jordan Lewis is set to join a group of big AFL names who have announced their retirements.

The day after Lewis was on hand to watch great friend Jarryd Roughead kick six goals in his swan song game at Hawthorn, the Herald Sun reports he will also call time.

Now at Melbourne, Lewis has played 318 games – but the 33-year-old utility has only managed 11 AFL appearances this season.

Renowned for his hardness and aggression, Lewis made the All-Australian team in 2014 and also won the Hawks’ best and fairest award.

It was a dream season for Lewis, with the Hawks in the middle of their 2013-15 premiership three-peat.

Lewis won his four flags with the Hawks, also playing in the 2008 team that upset Geelong in the grand final.

He has played the last three seasons at Melbourne after Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson famously moved on Lewis and fellow star Sam Mitchell at the end of 2016.

On Monday, Kieren Jack joined 2012 Sydney premiership teammates Jarrad McVeigh, Heath Grundy and Nick Smith in announcing his retirement.

With Roughead also confirming his retirement and Lewis about to do so, speculation continues about whether Luke Hodge will continue next season.

Another four-time premiership great at the Hawks, Hodge has impressed at Brisbane this season.

Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands had teammate Hayden Ballantyne on his shoulders as they left the field on Saturday night, with Sandilands retiring and Ballantyne to be delisted.

Richmond and GWS star Brett Deledio and North Melbourne duo Scott Thompson and Sam Wright will all retire.

Earlier this season, health issues prompted Western Bulldogs duo Tom Boyd and Liam Picken to prematurely end their AFL careers.
