AFL leader Phil Davis back for GWS

GWS will regain one of their five AFL leadership-group players this week, with co-captain and key defender Phil Davis cleared to face Port Adelaide on Saturday.

The Giants went into last weekend’s game against Collingwood with all five of their leaders sidelined.

Callan Ward (knee), Josh Kelly (calf), Stephen Coniglio (knee) and Matt de Boer (shoulder) were already on the casualty list before Davis pulled out the day before the game with soreness.

“Phil just pulled up a bit sore after the Richmond game, it was a bit soft down there at the MCG and he was just a bit tight,” Giants’ general manager of football Wayne Campbell said.

“He got through the Captain’s Run but with our policy for the year, we’re no risk, so he didn’t play.

“He’s trained fully this week and will play against Port Adelaide on Saturday night.”

None of the Giants’ other leaders will be back for the clash with Port at Adelaide Oval, where GWS defender Heath Shaw is scheduled to make his 300th senior appearance.

Kelly is listed as out for two more weeks, de Boer three and Coniglio seven, with Ward out for the season.

In the absence of the leadership group, Toby Greene captained the side to a 47-point win over the Pies.

The club reported defender Adam Kennedy was feeling well after he was taken to hospital after experiencing problems in a NEAFL game last Saturday.

“He got a bit of a knock on his shoulder and was sort of being treated for that, but all of a sudden had a shortness of breath, his heart started to race a bit,” Campbell said.

“He went pale so it was a bit scary for a little while there but the doctors had him under control.

“They called the ambulance, he went to hospital and had some tests there. By the time he left the hospital his heart rate was back down to a normal rate … at this stage he’s a chance to play this week but he might also miss, so we’ll just have to see what the results say.”
