News:

Carlton have the chance to resurrect a finals campaign on life-support and salute Mick Malthouse’s coaching career against Hawthorn.

The veteran will coach his 700th match at the MCG on Friday night, an extraordinary feat of coaching longevity that his opposing number Brendon Bolton saluted.

“It’s a great achievement by Mick isn’t it… congratulations to him,” he said.

With just two games under Bolton’s belt, there can barely have been a bigger gulf in experience between two AFL coaches.

Malthouse picked up his premiership medal as a player with Richmond with Bolton still in nappies, and started his coaching career when the Hawks assistant was in kindergarten.

But despite the experience gap, the side Bolton inherited from the recovering Alastair Clarkson will start warm favourites on Friday night.

Hawthorn have a ten-game winning streak against the Blues dating back to 2005, and on the MCG back to 2000.

In Carlton’s favour is the returning Chris Judd, declared fit from a hamstring strain suffered five minutes into his comeback from an achilles injury.

“All the Carlton fans can rest easy,” captain Marc Murphy said, declaring Judd a certain starter but with lowered expectations.

“We’re not going to expect him to come out and be best on ground, we just want him to play his role for the side.”

Hawthorn are more likely to be concerned with Bryce Gibbs, who was a dominant figure in the Blues’ tight loss to Geelong last week.

Bolton said the Hawks would be keeping a close eye on Gibbs but had not decided whether they would tag him.

“We need to make sure we nullify some of his outside run, whether or not that’s a job or just us winning more of the footy, we’ll go in with a plan,” he said.

“(Carlton) were terrific last week, they really pressured Geelong who we know have been an outstanding outfit for a long time.

“There’s going to be a real contest there … they’ve got some really good rebound.”

With Sam Mitchell, Brian Lake and Josh Gibson still weeks away from a return, Bolton hopes to drip-feed his side with premiership stars in the next month.

Murphy said the Blues’ focus would be on turning in a four-quarter performance.

“We let ourselves down for five or ten minutes against the Cats and against the good sides you can’t afford to do that,” he said.

Malthouse’s 700-game milestone has only been reached once before, by the legendary Magpie boss Jock McHale, but Malthouse is more likely to be concerned with his 4-7 win-loss record.

“I don’t think he’ll want to make a big deal about it but the boys got around him yesterday and got him a cake anyway,” Murphy said.
