Memories of the Western Bulldogs’ magical 2016 AFL premiership run have come flooding back for Brisbane Lions recruit Marcus Adams.
The ex-Dogs defender may have only played five games since being traded to the Lions but Adams reckons the Brisbane club has the same vibe as Whitten Oval three years ago.
A revitalised Brisbane are sitting pretty in third spot after seven straight wins ahead of Saturday’s derby clash with lowly Gold Coast.
While Adams did not want to make any bold premiership predictions for Brisbane, he admitted there was a welcome sense of deja vu at the Gabba.
Adams had entrenched himself in the Bulldogs’ back six before being forced to watch their remarkable 2016 premiership win from the sidelines with a foot injury.
“I feel a similar sort of feel around the place,” Adams said.
“It was really enjoyable coming into work every day (at Bulldogs) and it’s the same here, I love coming in every day.
“I don’t think anybody expected the Doggies to go quite so well in 2016.
“It was a similar sort of thing in terms of continuing to build each week, working together strongly week to week to make sure we continued to be the best version of ourselves … and I think that’s what we’re doing here as well.”
Adams has not tasted defeat in his five games for the Lions to date after finally earning his Brisbane spurs following knee surgery earlier this year.
He said he was not surprised by the Lions’ sudden 2019 resurgence but insisted there was no complacency in the player ranks as they eye a rare finals campaign.
“Going through the trade period last year and speaking with Fages (coach Chris Fagan) about the trends of the club, on paper it (improvement) looked like it was feasible,” Adams said.
“The fact is it’s come pretty quick, but I did expect that in the next couple of years.
“It’s probably a shock to a lot of people, but we just go out to try and improve weekly.”
