Andrews, Cameron move on from big AFL hit

Harris Andrews and Jeremy Cameron happily crossed paths at the airport last Wednesday, two AFL stars on their way to Melbourne for All-Australian honours.

Bumping into each other hasn’t always been so pleasant.

Andrews suffered bleeding on the brain and concussion in round 14 last season, when the Brisbane defender was on the wrong end of a sickening collision with Cameron.

The marking contest gone-horribly-wrong sent Cameron directly to the tribunal and cost the GWS star forward a five-game suspension.

But Andrews was back playing a week before Cameron’s ban ended and as last Wednesday’s chance catch-up showed, there are no hard feelings.

“That was a long time ago now, it’s all been forgotten,” Andrews said

“It’s good to catch up with him. I haven’t met him too many times, but he’s a good fella.”

The two stars have flourished since that controversy, with Andrews a popular selection at fullback for his first All-Australian selection after a stellar 2019 season.

Cameron was named All-Australian centre half-forward, his second selection in the honorary team, after he won the Coleman Medal for the first time.

They are key players in September, with the Lions hosting Richmond on Saturday night in a qualifying final.

Earlier that day, GWS are at home to the Western Bulldogs in an elimination final.

Andrews is well aware how fortunate he is not to have any lingering problems stemming from the collision with Cameron.

“I’ve been very, very lucky. I’ve had no ongoing issues or anything like that,” he said.

“I thank my lucky stars every day, obviously with concussion being such an issue now.”

Cameron is rapt for Andrews that he made the All-Australian team.

“He’s a great character and his season has just been enormous – I know first-hand, when you sit down and look at the Brisbane Lions, you look at him straight away, the way he marks the ball and intercepts it,” Cameron said.

“The way he gets it going back the other way is huge for them.”
