Andrews shines as Lions lament misses

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan may be losing sleep over his side’s kicking inaccuracy but he can take solace in the form of defensive rock Harris Andrews.

The 21-year-old was arguably best on ground in his side’s 22-point AFL loss to Essendon on Sunday, finishing with 24 touches and a match-high 13 intercept possessions.

Six of the Brisbane-raised talent’s 12 marks were contested as he constantly picked off the Bombers’ raids.

The Bombers had 21 more inside 50s than Brisbane but Brisbane’s 5-10 effort from set shots ultimately cost them as they missed a golden chance to push within eight points in the final quarter.

Andrews, in his fourth AFL season, did his All Australian chances no harm, though, as he helped limit the Bombers to just 24 shots from their 65 entries.

“That’s a fine effort and they kept us in the game,” Fagan said after the loss.

Essendon coach John Worsfold admitted Andrews was a “very good player” and he was often just too clever in intercepting their entries into the forward 50.

Fagan admitted he had real issues up front, though, with the 12.12 (84) to 8.14 (62) loss littered with easy misses another one to be filed in the “if only” category.

“We’ve had some good weeks and we’ve had some poor weeks but accuracy has really hurt us this year,” he said.

“If we’d been better (at kicking set shots), we could’ve won two to four more games.

“We practise it, it’s not like we don’t, and last year we were one of the most accurate in the AFL … mentally that’s half the battle.”

The Lions, who will be without livewire forward Charlie Cameron for the rest of the season, have a bye this weekend.

“I think it’s a good time for us to have a break, regenerate and reset our goals for the second half of the year,” Fagan said.
