The 2019 AFL season was a watershed for Brisbane but Lions vice-captain Harris Andrews has warned his teammates they have achieved nothing yet.
The Lions were viewed by many in pre-season as having the potential to sneak into the top eight but nothing more.
Instead Chris Fagan’s team blitzed their way into the top four and even had a chance to claim the club’s first minor premiership heading into the final round of home and away matches.
Back-to-back defeats to eventual grand finalists Richmond and GWS ended the club’s first finals campaign in a decade and Andrews says immediately after their campaign finished the players were turning their attention towards going even better in 2020.
Andrews said that mindset would be crucial in avoiding a slump like Melbourne’s, who went from one game away from a grand final in 2018 to finishing 17th in 2019 with just five wins all year.
“We didn’t really achieve too much last year. Obviously the ultimate goal is to win a premiership and we weren’t able to do that,” the 23-year-old said.
“There’s a real hunger within the group to make sure that we come back better … we realise that if we sit on our laurels and don’t work hard then it could potentially go the other way.”
The Lions signed off for the year in Brisbane on Thursday and will take a three-week break before returning to pre-season training in January with a camp in Tasmania.
Andrews says belief in Fagan’s coaching methods is key to the Lions continuing improvement.
“Nothing’s going to change from our point of view,” he said.
“Since Fages got to the club we’ve been striving for constant improvement. If every player improves by two or three per cent, as a group we’re only going to get better.”
