Blues’ Curnow cops only AFL panel sanction

Carlton’s Ed Curnow faces a fine for making contact to an AFL umpire in the only charge stemming from this round’s opening five matches.

Curnow will have to pay a $1950 fine if he pleads guilty to making reckless contact.

Geelong’s James Podsiadly has been cleared of wrongdoing despite making high contact with Greater Western Sydney’s Rhys Palmer in a collision during Saturday’s match at Skoda Stadium.

The match review panel ruled the contact was accidental, as Palmer ran into Podsiadly’s path after disposing of the ball and the Cat didn’t deviate from his line or attempt to bump.

North Melbourne defender Scott Thompson has also escaped sanction for a jab to the stomach of Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett, which was deemed not to be of great enough force to constitute an offence.

The panel will assess any incidents from Monday’s MCG match between Melbourne and Collingwood.
