Blues thump sorry Suns for second AFL win

Carlton have notched their second win of the season, bursting Gold Coast’s bubble on a night where re-signed midfielder Patrick Cripps underlined his worth at the club.

The bottom-placed Blues turned the screws on the Suns 12.7 (79) to 5.14 (44) at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night to put them within two wins of the 17th-placed side.

Overcoming a sloppy start, Carlton kicked seven goals in a quarter for the first time in four years as the Suns offered little after quarter time in front of 10,766 fans.

Gold Coast led by two at the main break but were outworked in what was a quick return to earth after last Saturday’s remarkable defeat of Sydney.

Cripps, who signed a three-year contract extension this week, was a standout for the Blues with 38 touches and 11 tackles.

His influence turned the game in the second quarter after Peter Wright had the hosts humming.

The tall forward kicked two of three quick Suns goals but it descended into a slippery, scrappy affair from there as Carlton dominated possession but had little to show for it.

Cripps and captain Marc Murphy (36 disposals) offered a way forward in a second term that only yielded them two goals.

They remained the quicker side to the ball in the third term and it eventually led to a run of seven straight goals.

Blue Jacob Weitering was helped off after jarring his leg in the final term while the Suns played a man down for three quarters once David Swallow stumbled off with concussion.

Cripps’ tackle looked innocuous but it was enough to send Swallow spinning after his head slid into the turf when he was unable to break his fall.

Frustrated Suns captain Steven May was one of his side’s best, but could find himself in strife after he was reported for a high bump on Ed Curnow in the final quarter.
