Essendon have received a timely boost with dashing defender Conor McKenna to return from Northern Ireland after a bout of homesickness.
McKenna flew back to Belfast last month after the 23-year-old requested time away for family reasons.
But he has maintained his fitness levels while away and the club confirmed on Sunday evening that he will soon resume the Bombers’ pre-season program.
“I want to thank the club for the continuous support they show both myself and my family,” McKenna said.
“I’m looking forward to returning to training in the coming days.”
Essendon have endured an injury-ravaged preparation for the 2020 season.
Key players such as captain Dyson Heppell (foot), Orazio Fantasia (hip), Joe Daniher (groin), Michael Hurley (shoulder), Tom Bellchambers (knee), Cale Hooker (hip) and David Zaharakis (ankle) have been slowed by injury.
McKenna’s departure temporarily added to that tale of woe, but key figures at the club worked hard to facilitate his return.
“We remained in constant communication with Conor and his family, he continues to have our full support,” Essendon football boss Dan Richardson said.
“We look forward to Conor returning to training mid this week alongside the entire squad following their short break.”
The Bombers kick off their 2020 campaign with an afternoon clash against Fremantle at Marvel Stadium on Saturday March 21.
