Bontempelli fined, can win AFL’s Brownlow

Brownlow Medal favourites Patrick Cripps and Marcus Bontempelli remain eligible for the AFL’s highest individual honour after the match review findings.

Bontempelli will also play in the Western Bulldogs’ massive round-23 match against Adelaide after he was fined $2000 for rough conduct.

His late bump on Nick Haynes forced the GWS defender from the field.

A suspension would have made Bontempelli ineligible for the Brownlow, but match reviewer Michael Christian assessed the impact as low and that saved the Bulldogs midfield ace.

Cripps stays in contention to become Carlton’s first Brownlow Medallist for nine years after he was cleared for his collision with St Kilda opponent Hunter Clark.

Also on Monday, Fremantle’s Michael Walters was fined $1000 for staging after he exaggerated contact from Essendon defender Martin Gleeson.

Brisbane young gun Cameron Rayner was fined $2000 for kneeing Geelong captain Joel Selwood and Hawthorn onballer Jaeger O’Meara was hit with a $1000 penalty for careless umpire contact.
