Cameron says Campbell rock solid at GWS

GWS coach Leon Cameron has hit back at claims that Giants’ football boss Wayne Campbell has strained relationships with key players and staff members which threaten his tenure at the AFL club.

Fox Sports reported on Monday that the communication issues and the club’s poor recent record of player retention would likely lead to Campbell’s departure at the end of the season.

“He’s contracted to the end of next year like I am and he’s rock solid at our footy club,” Cameron said.

‘He’s been fantastic. We’ve got a great relationship, the players have got a great relationship so it was bit of a surprise from left field last night.

“But after I read it then I sort of dismissed it and I thought most of it is just totally untrue.”

Cameron said he had broached the matter with Campbell on Tuesday.

“We said ”where has this article come from?’ because it was a genuine surprise,” he said.

“Our performance on the weekend was unacceptable and no doubt when you have a bad performance people are are going to try to pick at your footy club.”

Coming off a 56- point flogging by Hawthorn last week, Cameron expected GWS to be up for the fight against the in-form Western Bulldogs side at Giants Stadium on Sunday,

Cameron was adamant that although Stephen Coniglio had yet to re-sign with GWS, the matter was not causing any angst at the club or affecting their future planning.

The injured midfielder has been linked a to a number of Victorian clubs, but Cameron said Coniglio was still heavily invested in GWS and looking to return from his knee injury in time to play in the finals.

‘We had a meeting with our entire group yesterday after our review and Stephen Coniglio was front and square and was probably our most vocal,” Cameron said.

“We catch up every Tuesday and talk about his injury and his rehab, he’s in a really good frame of mind.

“He”ll spend time with his family and his friends and he’ll come to that decision but I don’t see any indication that it’s going to go against the Giants.”
