Carlton Blues vs St Kilda Saints Preview

The Blues and the Saints follow a similar script heading into Round 6.

Previously undefeated, both sides came crashing back to earth last week – the Blues suffering a disheartening blowout loss to the Crows, and the Saints denied a chance to come back and steal the win against Collingwood in the dying stages.

Reflecting on last week, I think Carlton is much more concerning.

The Blues basically never got off the bus against the Crows, conceding an almost insurmountable margin in the first term despite winning the clearances and inside 50 count.

St Kilda, on the other hand, lost no admirers in its heavyweight clash against Collingwood.

Realistically, it was the Saints’ first big test against a genuine flag contender, and in my mind, they passed with flying colours after staging a late fightback when it appeared the game was over.

As far as this one goes, Carlton definitely has the edge up forward, but it’s what the Blues are doing with the ball inside 50 that has me worried.

Taking marks in the forward half of the ground has been a huge challenge for Michael Voss’ side, an area the Saints have excelled in across the opening five rounds.

That said, I think the Blues have a distinct advantage in other areas that could go a long way to winning them this game. Winning the clearances last week wasn’t just a fluke – it’s something Carlton has been doing well all year – while I also think the Blues are a much better tackling side than they are given credit for.

Lastly, the trends also paint a compelling picture as far as Carlton is concerned. The Blues are 8-1 at the line off a previous loss, and in some ways, I do think last week’s defeat could be seen as a positive.

If Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow can take some big grabs up forward, I like the Blues to bounce back and cover in front of what should be a huge crowd.
