Collingwood Magpies vs Sydney Swans Preview
Make no mistake, Collingwood would have had this game circled on the calendar for a long time.
A rematch of last year’s thrilling Prelim Final awaits on Sunday between the ladder-leading Pies and an out of sorts Sydney team fighting to keep its season alive.
Like they’ve done for the last 18 months, the Pies weathered the storm against the Crows last week, winning the stoppages and finding some late targets inside 50 to prevail by a single point on Steele Sidebottom’s late shot at goal.
Fittingly, the Swans were on the receiving end of a one-point loss to rivals GWS thanks to Toby Greene’s late goal.
Injuries are partly to blame, but the Swans look like a team struggling for answers and maybe a sense of identity – made only worse by a blowout defeat to Geelong two weeks ago that had to stir up bad memories.
Love them or hate them, the Pies are a wonderful team to watch, and it’s fair to say we haven’t seen a side play with so much belief in a very long time.
Craig McRae’s men have now won nine games by a goal or less under his tenure, a testament to his coaching but also the fact Collingwood is always so in sync.
It’s almost scary how comfortable the Pies are playing from behind, and given the Swans late collapse last week, it only has to make Sydney fans more nervous.
