Richmond have snared Adelaide forward-midfielder Chris Knights in the first completed move under AFL free agency.

The 26-year-old was an unrestricted free agent, meaning he was able to join the club of his choice.

Knights played 96 games for the Crows over eight seasons, but just five this year, prompting him to seek a fresh chance in his home state.

“Your career is a short one and you just have to make the most of it and Richmond gave me that opportunity, so I’m just delighted to be here,” Knights said on Monday.

Tigers football general manager Craig Cameron said Knights had the skill to become an important player with greater opportunity.

“We’re delighted to have gained Chris’ services, as we believe he’ll be a valuable acquisition for our group,” Cameron said.

“Chris has the all-round talent, versatility, and experience to really help us and we feel that he’ll thrive with the opportunities at Tigerland.”

Richmond have a solid recent history with recruits from rival clubs.

Ex-Adelaide ruckman Ivan Maric had a superb first season with the Tigers this year, while Shaun Grigg from Carlton and Bachar Houli from Essendon have both become key players since joining Richmond last season.
