Crows relishing AFL litmus test: Pyke

Adelaide coach Don Pyke can’t wait for the AFL’s litmus test.

The Crows may be secure in the top eight for at least another week, but their next assignment is arguably the competition’s toughest: facing reigning premiers West Coast at Perth’s Optus Stadium.

“It’s a great test, no doubt,” Pyke said after Adelaide’s gritty 22-point win against St Kilda on Saturday night.

“They are a quality side. They play that ground really well.

“But the reality is for us to be in this comp and to push on into September, this is exactly the sort of test and challenge we have got to rise for.”

Adelaide will enter the fixture in eighth spot but feeling the heat from a chasing pack of clubs.

And while most pundits will write off their chances of upsetting the Eagles, Pyke said his players had received a timely confidence boost with their win over St Kilda.

The Crows, despite still appearing short of top gear, led from start to finish in their 14.8 (92) to 10.10 (70) victory on Saturday night at Adelaide Oval.

It was only Adelaide’s second win from the past six games but Pyke took some comfort from the result.

“Obviously we take some real confidence and belief out of the win,” he said.

“But we need to carry that into next week and come ready to play again the same way.”

The Eagles overran the Crows for a 12-point win at Adelaide Oval in round 10.

“We had a great contest against them (West Coast) over here earlier in the season so we know we’re capable,” Pyke said.

A core of senior Crows players will likely fly to Perth on Friday, ahead of the Sunday fixture.
