Crows to form panel for next AFL coach

Adelaide hierarchy will form a selection panel to find the AFL club’s next coach within days.

Incumbent Don Pyke quit on Thursday, ending his four-year tenure at the club.

Crows chairman Rob Chapman says the club will move quickly to task a panel to find Pyke’s successor.

“We will … probably announce something in a very short period of time,” Chapman said.

“It will be a panel made up of the right people.

“It will be an extensive search to find the very best replacement that we can and we’re confident that we can to do that.

“We know who exists in that (coaching) talent pool and we will go about that judiciously.

“It has got to be exhaustive … we have got to sit down and look at what is the right qualities, the right behaviours, what we are looking for in the coach for our football club.”

Pyke said his decision to resign wasn’t impacting ongoing reviews of all operations at the Crows.

An internal football department review is being held while a four-member panel headed by Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall is performing an external review.

“The review process will still continue as it set out to … for the next couple of weeks,” Adelaide chief executive Andrew Fagan said.

‘This (Pyke) decision is completely separate to that.

“But obviously the key themes and insights might help inform us as we look to identify the best candidate to now take the senior coaching role.

“What we learn from that will help us with the next step we will take.”

Pyke stood down on Thursday, conceding he was part of the problem at the Crows, who have missed the finals in the past two seasons after being losing grand finalists in 2017.

“Clearly the team’s recent performance and the current state of the club and the playing group is not to our or to my expectations,” he said.

“And for this, in my role, I ultimately accept responsibility.

“There were a number of factors … in the end it came down to what I felt is in the best interests of the team and the club.

“I believe the club needs some clean air and a fresh face to move forward and feel that for me to continue could potentially hold back progress.”
