Dew extends contract with AFL Suns

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew will stay at the AFL club until the end of the 2022 season after signing a two-year contract extension.

The two-time premiership winning player is in his third season as Suns coach having succeeded Rodney Eade in 2017.

Despite winning just 10 of his 50 games at the Suns, Dew has been credited for overhauling a list which has lost several key players in recent seasons including Tom Lynch, Steven May and foundation captain Gary Ablett.

Suns chairman Tony Cochrane is confident the 40-year-old is taking the club in the right direction and deserved the extension.

“We know that we have the right coach to lead this club to our first finals campaign and a premiership,” Cochrane said.

“He has done a fantastic job during a challenging first two years and everyone can see we are writing our own history and are playing exciting, hard-running footy.”

Dew’s extension was all but finalised earlier in the year but he and the club decided to delay an announcement until after the COVID-19 lockdown earlier in the year.

“We have high expectations for this group and there is still a lot of hard work to do, but we are heading in the right direction,” Dew said.
