Docker Bennell in the headlines again

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says he is concerned for injured star Harley Bennell, who is under investigation by the AFL club for his behaviour at a WAFL game on Saturday.

Former Gold Coast player Bennell is yet to play a match for the Dockers due to ongoing serious calf injuries.

The 24-year-old twice interrupted the three-quarter time huddle of the match between Peel Thunder and Swan Districts to speak to his cousin Traye Bennell before being spoken to by Dockers assistant coach Roger Hayden.

“Of course I’m concerned, I’m concerned about all of my players’ welfare,” said Lyon after the Dockers beat Richmond by two points at the MCG on Sunday.

“He’s had an incredibly rough run.

“I’m not here to defend, I’m not here to castigate, I’m really here to say that I haven’t got all of the information.

“I understand there is some noise out there but we need to get the facts and gather ourselves, come together.

“Our fundamental model, and mine in particular, is to support and challenge – always support the person and challenge the behaviour.”

Earlier this year, Bennell was ordered off a Gold Coast-bound flight as airline staff believed he was under the influence of alcohol.

The highly-talented Bennell was taken by the Suns with pick No.2 in the 2010 national draft.

He has kicked 92 goals in 81 games.
