Docker Taberner cut down by foot problem

Out-of-favour Fremantle forward Cam McCarthy could get another chance to prove his worth after Matt Taberner was cut down by a serious foot injury.

Taberner is set to miss eight weeks of action after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left foot.

The 25-year-old missed 15 weeks last season after breaking a metatarsal bone in the same foot, but the latest injury isn’t directly related.

Taberner has been Fremantle’s best forward this season and his absence will heap even more pressure on new recruit Jesse Hogan.

McCarthy started the season with a five-goal haul against North Melbourne, but the former GWS forward was dumped after the round-seven loss to Adelaide following two goalless games.

The 24-year-old leads the list of players hoping for a recall for Sunday’s clash with Brisbane at Optus Stadium.

In other injury news, ruckman Sean Darcy is set to miss up to six weeks with an ankle injury.

But Harley Bennell could make his WAFL return this weekend after finally recovering from a string of calf problems.

“As long as he gets through all of training this week (he can play),” Fremantle high performance manager Jason Weber said.

“Harley trained really strongly on the weekend so he’s doing a great over the past couple of months so we’re hoping to see him back and on the field.”
