Dockers’ AFL coach search takes a twist

The race to be Fremantle’s next senior head coach has been thrown wide open after reports surfaced that frontrunner Justin Longmuir is strongly considering joining Carlton.

Longmuir was the hot early favourite to be named Dockers coach after Ross Lyon was sacked with a year remaining on his contract.

But the current Collingwood assistant is reportedly being heavily chased by the Blues, and could join Carlton as a senior assistant to new head coach David Teague.

Adelaide, who parted ways with Don Pyke last week, are also reportedly interested in luring Longmuir their way.

If Longmuir pulls out of the race to join Fremantle, it would leave the likes of Peter Sumich, Michael Voss, Dean Solomon, and perhaps one or two other candidates to fight for the role.

Sumich’s chances might have been harmed after recently taking a swipe at his old club West Coast in the wake of the Willie Rioli ASADA drama.
