Dockers not seduced by big AFL win

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has warned his players not to get “seduced” by the hype surrounding their 70-point AFL thrashing of Collingwood last Friday.

The Dockers started the year as one of the premiership favourites, and they lived up to their reputation with a ruthless demolition of the Magpies.

Lyon was pleased with the result, but said there were still numerous areas his team needed to improve over the coming weeks.

“It’s never as good, and it’s never as bad as what is written,” Lyon told Perth radio station 6PR.

“For us, we’re not as good as what it seems. We can play good footy, but we wouldn’t want to be seduced by it.

“And they (Collingwood) are clearly not as bad as it may seem.

“It was a really good result. We worked hard. But as always, we viewed the tape and there’s plenty of opportunities where we could have done things better.”

Star Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe was disappointed to get subbed out of the match late in the third quarter.

Fyfe battled a knee injury during the pre-season, and Lyon said it was a good decision to sub him out.

“He was cramping heavily. We were 80 points up and he was cramping twice. We’d kick ourselves if he strained a calf by continuing on,” Lyon said.

“Sometimes you’ve got to save people from themselves. We made the decision in the best interests of the football club and Nathan.”

The Dockers will enjoy a week off before hosting Gold Coast at Patersons Stadium on March 29.
