Ellis savours AFL flag as departure looms

Richmond wingman Brandon Ellis is poised to depart the club as a two-time AFL premiership player after the Tigers’ thumping grand-final win over GWS.

While a decision has not yet been made official, restricted free agent Ellis is all but certain to join Gold Coast on a long-term deal.

Ellis insisted after Saturday’s grand final that he was still working through his situation but his move to the Suns is likely to be confirmed in the coming days.

Ellis had been keen to stay at Punt Road but with the Tigers reportedly unwilling to match the Gold Coast offer, he can at least take solace in going out on a high.

“Pretty amazing to be able to win two flags,” he said as the Tigers celebrated their 89-point win at the MCG.

“I’m not quite sure of my future yet. I’ll sit down with my manager on Wednesday and the club and we’ll try and work through something.

“But the club’s been fantastic in just letting me play footy and not worry about that stuff. We’ll work something out soon.”

A second premiership will taste particularly sweet for Ellis given he was dropped for last year’s finals series.

The 26-year-old worked his way back into contention and played all bar two games this season.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” he said.

“It’s going to take a while to sink in. But this is what we dream of as kids, (just) to play AFL, let alone win two flags.

“I’m over the moon. I can’t really believe it’s happening.”
