Essendon Bombers vs Port Adelaide Power Preview

The sixth-placed Bombers face a favourable run home, but there’s nothing easy about this week’s clash against red-hot Port Adelaide at the MCG.

Essendon fans need no reminding of their agonising five-point loss to Port only two months earlier, a game that saw the Bombers completely smashed in the inside 50 count with a whopping 71 turnovers also proving costly.

Brad Scott will be hoping his side can improve on those mistakes, but it could be another long night at the office with key ruckman Sam Draper uncertain to play after missing last week’s loss to Fremantle.

Coming off a 38-point thumbing over the Cats before the bye, the Power midfield is firing on all cylinders, led by potential Brownlow Medalist, Zak Butters.

The Power should sense the importance of a win as far as the top four is concerned, but given their troubles away from home this season (especially at the ‘G), this is also a “prove it” game for the visitors.

As mentioned earlier, teams haven’t performed well off the bye this season, which does make this a potential danger game for bettors.

On paper though, Port rank first in points-per-game — so there’s every chance they blow the Bombers out of the water given Essendon’s scoring troubles this year.

Combined with the Power’s outstanding tackling and work around the clearances, Port look to have the edge in what could be a back and forth contest under lights.
