Essendon ‘flaky’ with AFL finals on line

Essendon players and coach John Worsfold are copping it from former teammates, club legends and AFL greats following their diabolical performance against Western Bulldogs.

Bombers great Brendon Goddard led the chorus of criticism on Monday night after Essendon conceded a staggering 21 straight goals in the 103-point thrashing last Saturday.

The Dons were forced into several injury changes for the clash but Goddard was stunned his former teammates laid down after they were thrashed by 59 points a week earlier.

“It was demoralising,” Goddard told AFL Tonight.

“It was a bitter pill to swallow seeing across the board a lack of effort. Zachy Merrett and Patty Ambrose (were) guys that didn’t let the scoreboard dictate their effort and they stood out because of how poor everyone else was.

“Some of the things I saw, it was almost like a training drill for the Bulldogs which is pretty concerning two weeks out from a potential finals campaign.

“What concerned me the most was the lack of response. There was no response from the week before … and (they were) twice as bad this week.”

Essendon must win one of their two remaining games to play finals and Bombers’ three-time premiership player Tim Watson said questions would be asked of Worsfold’s future if they miss out.

“I think if they have two poor losses like they’ve experienced in the last two weeks, I think there will be a discussion about the coach,” Watson told Talking Footy.

“They look like they’ve lost their confidence, they look like they’ve got a game plan that’s not stacking up and standing up to the heat whatsoever.”

AFL legend Jonathan Brown doesn’t think Essendon will have an impact even if they play finals.

“I said after round one they’ve got no generals, no strength in leadership and I’m doubling down on that,” Brown told Fox Footy.

“They are flaky, the whole Essendon list, all those players out there in the last fortnight, all of them.”
