Adelaide coach Don Pyke says he hasn’t started a cull of senior players despite the exit of two stalwarts from the AFL club.
Midfielder Richard Douglas is joining utility Andy Otten in leaving the Crows.
Adelaide issued a statement on Thursday morning headlined ‘Douglas to retire at season’s end’.
But within hours, the 32-year-old Douglas says he’s open to playing on elsewhere.
Pyke says the exit of Douglas and 30-year-old Otten, who has announced his AFL retirement, isn’t a precursor to the departure of more senior Crows.
“I still think there’s a place for a lot of our senior players in terms of their capacity to play the game and play to a really high standard,” Pyke told reporters on Thursday.
“So I don’t think it’s ringing a bell saying this is the start of the dawning of an end of an era.
“This is a couple of guys who have reached a decision to move on from their footy journey at the Adelaide Crows.”
Douglas said the decision had been made for him, but he was comfortable in ending his 14-season Crows career.
“It’s probably time the club is looking to go down another direction and getting some youth into the list,” Douglas, flanked by Pyke, told reporters.
“And for me, my time has been. I have given all I can to the footy club and loved every minute but I think it’s a good fit to move on.
“I will certainly consider any option … never say never.
“If there’s opportunities there or any club is interested, then I’ll certainly look at it.”
Adelaide’s 31-year-old Sam Jacobs, who has fallen behind the 24-year-old Reilly O’Brien as first-choice ruckman, is rumoured to have been approached by GWS.
“I haven’t directly asked him whether he has or he hasn’t,” Pyke said of Jacobs.
“I know there’s other reports of other players meeting with clubs … that seems to be more the norm now than in the last few years.
“Clearly, Sam, if that’s the case, will make a decision.
“We’re super-keen for Sam to stay at the footy club. We have approached him and spoken to his manager about that and we’ll see how that plays out.”
The future of key forward Josh Jenkins, 30, who has fallen out of selection favour, remains clouded despite being contracted for another two seasons.
Utility Hugh Greenwood, 27, and defender Alex Keath, also 27, are trade targets of rival clubs – the pair want longer contracts than the Crows are offering.
