Brisbane’s Alex Witherden is confident their fearless brand of football will hold up well in Saturday’s top-of-the-table AFL clash with Geelong.
The Lions could enter the final round of the regular season on top of the ladder if they topple the Cats at the Gabba.
It will mark 50 games for the 20-year-old Witherden, who is one of a batch of emerging talents to help the Lions improve on a five-win 2018 season in which they finished 15th.
The Lions were upstaged by Collingwood in an Easter Thursday blockbuster, but Chris Fagan’s side have bounced back from that hiding to win their last eight games.
On track for another Gabba sell-out, Witherden believes his side learnt from what has been their only loss from 10 home games this season.
“It’s going to be a massive game on the weekend and a massive occasion,” he said.
“But if you play fearful that’s when you make mistakes, you become timid and your attack on the ball isn’t there.
“It’s about continuing to play that fearless, ruthless type of footy that has held us in good stead for 20 weeks until this point.”
Brisbane have beaten Port Adelaide and GWS on the road, while also toppling Hawthorn in Tasmania and thumping Gold Coast by 91 points on Saturday as part of their unbeaten run.
But Witherden admitted games against the Cats and fourth-placed Richmond ahead of finals would provide the perfect litmus test.
“We’ve played 16 other sides and held our own on most occasions; I think we’re going all right,” he said.
“But it’ll be a great test over the next couple of weeks and I’m sure we’ll learn a few lessons win, lose or draw and we’ll use those lessons to help us improve and grow.”
