Fremantle Dockers vs North Melbourne Kangaroos Preview

It’s only early, but Fremantle’s shock loss to undermanned St Kilda last week has cast some questions over John Longmuir’s side.

The Dockers were always in for a transition period with David Mundy retiring and Rory Lobb departing for the Dogs, but after managing only 52 points, it was clear scoring might be a big issue this year.

That wasn’t so much the case for North last week, the Roos winning a five-point thriller over West Coast in Alastair Clarkson’s first game as coach.

Rookie Harry Sheezel has been the talk of the league after picking up top Rising Star votes, while Nick Larkey also looks a serious Coleman Medal smoky after snagging a six-goal bag.

The Dockers are still setup to squeeze the life out of opponents defensively, but they’ll need more than just Nat Fyfe up forward to solve their scoring issues.

Really, there’s no quick term fix, and this does shape as an intriguing game against a much-improved North Melbourne side with rising confidence levels.

The Roos have lost four straight to the Dockers dating back to 2018, but there was a lot to like about their work around the clearances and their tackling inside 50 last week.

This is a much tougher test against a finals-ready team though, and as the line suggests, it’s a tall order for a young club playing on the road.

Avoiding the head-to-head market is the safest play in this one, and it’s worth noting North’s last six away trips to face Fremantle have all resulted in the Under.

With the Dockers struggling to find goals and North still capable of a stinker here and there, a low-scoring game could be on the cards.
