Fremantle re-sign AFL Rising Star Serong

Fremantle have re-signed Rising Star winner Caleb Serong for a further two years, tying him to the AFL club until the end of 2023.

Serong was already contracted until the end of next year, but the Dockers were desperate to extend that following his stunning debut season.

The 19-year-old averaged 16.9 possessions and 3.4 clearances per game while also playing lockdown roles on some of the competition’s stars.

One of his best performances came in the round-eight loss to Geelong, when he tallied 22 disposals and a goal while restricting Patrick Dangerfield to 18 disposals.

Serong also played on Sydney’s Luke Parker, Carlton’s Patrick Cripps, Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli, and Collingwood’s Taylor Adams.

The 179cm midfielder has already been likened to former Docker Lachie Neale, who is the favourite to win this year’s Brownlow medal.

Serong, who was pick No.8 in last year’s national draft, is excited about Fremantle’s future prospects.

“We’re really close-knit and it’s really exciting what we’re building,” Serong said.

“It was a really easy decision for me (to re-sign), I was able to do it as soon as I could and I’m really excited to be locked in for a few more years.”

Serong, Adam Cerra, and Andrew Brayshaw will form the core of Fremantle’s next generation midfield group, along with 22-year-old ruckman Sean Darcy.

“I think we’ve got a lot of confidence in what this group can do,” Serong said.

“In the back half of this year, we’ve really shown the excitement is there. Not just for this group but for the fans and everyone watching.

“I think all the boys are really excited about what we can do and achieve with who we have here at the moment, I can’t wait for the next few years.”

Fremantle also re-signed defender Brennan Cox for a further two years earlier this week.
