Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn Hawks Preview
The traditional Easter Monday clash should have some extra spice to it this year with the Cats sitting 0-3.
The last reigning premier to begin the first three rounds without a win was North Melbourne in 1976, and while the Roos went on to play in the Grand Final that year, it’s hard to see the Cats making it back based on the brand of footy they’ve played so far.
It’s only three games, but Patrick Dangerfield’s captaincy has already come under fire with the play (and effort) through the midfield severely lacking, and Tom Hawkins looking a shell of his former self up forward.
Some crucial injuries to Mitch Duncan and Jake Kolodjashnij can’t be overlooked, but with the Cats getting smashed in the contested possession count each game this year, Chris Scott has some serious work on his hands.
Fortunately, the Hawks are the easy beats this year – or at least that’s what we thought ahead of last week’s grudge match against North and Clarko.
Not surprisingly, Sam Mitchell coached the game of his life against his old boss, while Hawthorn fans had to be pleased with a three-goal performance from returning forward Tyler Brockman in his first game back from injury.
To make matters more complicated, the Hawks were triumphant on this day last year winning a 92-80 thriller, and as we all know, these two clubs tend to put on a classic nearly every time they meet.
That said, the Hawks are lacking some serious leadership this year which could see them exposed on such a big stage.
They’ll certainly come out and play their aggressive, straight up the corridor brand of footy that has drawn mix results so far, but against a Geelong midfield that is still beyond talented on paper, nothing is going to come easy.
