Geelong Cats vs Sydney Swans Preview
The stage is set for a fiery Grand Final rematch on Saturday with the Cats playing their first game of the season at Kardinia Park.
A couple of cruisy fixtures against easy beats Hawthorn and West Coast has set the reigning premier’s back on track, but they’re about to face a much stiffer challenge against a Swans side that has likely had this one circled since the schedule was released.
As they did against the Hawks, Geelong looked methodical for most of the game last week, picking apart West Coast in style – much like the side we came to fear last season.
The Swans, on the other hand, prevailed in a tight tussle with Richmond by a comfortable 44-points in the end, Tom Papley proving the catalyst setting a new career-high with six goals.
Statistically, this shapes as fascinating contest with both sides scoring points at will, but I do think the Swans hold an advantage in a few key areas.
Sydney has had its woes at times this year, but the Swans still rank among the top five sides in tackling and first in inside 50s per game.
The Cats have had some real issues down back at times, and they are also sweating the status of Tyson Stengel and Rhys Stanley at time of publish.
Of course, you do have to factor in home-ground advantage, as well as the “revenge” storyline perhaps proving too much for the Swans mentally.
That said, the Swans prevailed at this ground way back in 2018, so there’s a definite case for the upset.
Throw in the fact Sydney has covered in six of its last 10 games as the underdog at the line, and I think the two-goal head start is worth taking advantage of.
