GWS vice-captain Josh kelly is confident the Giants spiritual leader and 110 per cent man Toby Greene can overturn a suspension and play in Saturday’s AFL preliminary final against Collingwood.
Midfielder-forward Greene, arguably the Giants most influential player, was suspended for making unreasonable or unnecessary contact to the eye region of Brisbane’s Lachie Neale in Saturday’s semifinal.
‘”We’re confident we can get a good result, from that,” Kelly said.
Greene will front the tribunal on Tuesday evening to fight the ban, just over a week after being fined $7500 following a direct referral on a misconduct charge involving several incidents where he made contact with the face of Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli.
“Toby has been our spirit leader this year, we’ve lost a few players at the back end of the season,” Kelly said.
“‘He’s gone in the midfield and he’s led our team really well and the way he is playing on the edge at the moment its good for us.
“Obviously last week he understands he did something wrong but he’s apologised.
“We enjoy running out alongside him because we know were getting 110 per cent effort from him.
“The way he’s impacted our team in the second half of the year has just been massive.”
With Brisbane winning 24 more contested possessions on Saturday, Kelly acknowledged the GWS midfield needed to lift against Collingwood.
“We probably didn’t have our best performance and we need to look at a couple of things around getting that contested ball stat back in our favour,” Kelly said.
At the same stage two years ago, GWS played in front of a crowd of almost 95,000, the vast majority of who were Richmond supporters.
They can expect another overwhelmingly hostile crowd on Saturday.
“It’s something we just need to use to spur us on,” Kelly said.
After two preliminary final losses, Kelly felt a more mature GWS were better equipped going into Saturday’s game.
“There’s no doubt there’s a buzz around the club at the moment knowing that we’re where we are again,” he said.
“But I also feel like we’ve still got a lot to do and feeling quite confident with the momentum were building and the football we’re playing at the moment.
“We feel like we’re gelling well as a team and hitting our strides at the right time”.
