Giants confident on new Cameron contract

Greater Western Sydney are confident of agreeing a new deal with Jeremy Cameron as they continue to tie their key players down on long-term contracts.

Lachie Whitfield put pen to paper on a new seven-year deal on Monday, joining teammates Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly in committing their long-term futures to the AFL club.

In November, it was reported the Giants had offered Cameron, Whitfield and Zac Williams new deals, with the trio’s contracts set to expire at the end of 2020.

Giants football operations manager Jason McCartney says talks over a new contract for 26-year-old Cameron are well placed ahead of next season.

Coleman medalist Cameron has scored 403 goals in 154 games for GWS since making his debut in 2012.

“We made a conscious decision for Jeremy to really leave those discussions alone during the season,” McCartney told RSN on Tuesday.

“Jeremy was really appreciative of that, and obviously had a great year. We’ve had some good chats post the season finishing.

“We’re really comfortable with where it all fits. We’re positive.

“Until you sign off on a deal, you never really know, but we feel like it’s pretty well placed.”

Gun midfielder Whitfield mentioned the interest of Melbourne clubs when discussing the futures of Cameron and Williams after signing his new contract on Monday.

“It’s going to be tough (to keep them),” Whitfield said.

“I know there’s obviously going to be a lot of speculation for those two and there’s probably going to be deals from the Melbourne clubs that are going to be quite enticing, but we’re real tight family up here and I’m hoping that they will stay.”

McCartney, who was promoted to general manager from his previous role of list manager last month, has backed the Giants’ policy of rewarding their players with lengthy contracts.

“I think the biggest thing for us is that we work by the mantra that we’re a club like no other. We do things a bit differently.

“With our key players, if we can get them on long-term deals, we’re happy to go (down) that path.

“It gives us more flexibility and certainty for the future.”
