GWS spearhead Jeremy Cameron has revealed how staying calm triggered his straightest AFL goalkicking effort of the season and is sure the win over Collingwood will trigger a late season surge.
The draw offers sixth-placed GWS a chance to get momentum heading into the finals, as their last five games are all against sides below them on the ladder.
The win over Collingwood came after three consecutive defeats, and was their first victory against a current top eight side in three months, though they did beat Essendon, Richmond and Geelong in the first four rounds.
“It (the win over Collingwood) will get us going for sure,” said Cameron, whose team haven’t won more than three matches in a row this season.
“We can’t just let it be one good win and then come out and play s— footy next week.
“We want to get the ball rolling now that its got it started, so there’s no reason why we can’t keep going.”
Cameron’s 6.0 scoring effort against Collingwood lifted him to 54 for the season, eight clear of closest Coleman Medal challenger challenger Ben Brown of the Kangaroos, the only man within single-digit range of the Giants star.
It was Cameron’s third haul of six or more goals this season, after kicking 7.5 against Richmond and 6.1 against St Kilda.
But it was only the second time this year he hasn’t kicked a behind, having notched 38 of them in the current campaign.
“I would have liked to have kicked straighter. Looking back at my season I’ve had a lot of opportunities,” Cameron said.
“If it’s in a close game and you’re missing goals, it does hurt the side a bit, so it was something I worked on during the week.
“I put a fair bit of time into just staying calm when you get the ball … and take your 30 seconds and go back and nail it
“I was really happy I was able to do that.”
Cameron revealed the adversity generated by three successive losses, and key players Stephen Coniglio and Phil Davis joining an already extensive injury list, motivated the side against Collingwood.
“There was a fair bit going against us but it’s funny when that sort of stuff happens because it sort of drives you a bit more,” Cameron said..
“These are the games that you play for and it will definitely stay in my memory for a while.”
