The Suns will be looking to shift the focus back to winning footy on Saturday following the shock midweek sacking of Stuart Dew.

Gold Coast was far from disgraced in a 33-point loss to Port Adelaide last week, but with the club suffering another midseason lull, the board made the difficult decision to move on before finals are completely out of the picture.

Sitting 13th, making the eight isn’t entirely out of the question, but the Suns face a tough run home starting this week against a Saints side that has given them all kinds of problems.

St Kilda has won seven of its last eight games against the Gold Coast by 1-39 points, but at the same time, it’s equally difficult to feel confident in the Saints following last week’s loss to Melbourne.

As has been the theme all year, it feels as though the Saints are happy to kick low scores and hang around in games, relying entirely on their defensive first strategy – one that hasn’t been all that sound of late.

Even worse, Max King’s season is now over following a hit to the shoulder last week, depleting the Saints’ already thin forward line even further.

For whatever reason, players tend to respond well following a coach sacking, so it’s no surprise to find the Gold Coast favoured in the market.

There’s no doubt the playing group may feel they let their long-time coach down, and although they lacked the legs to go with Port last week, there were still encouraging signs with the Suns winning the clearances and the hit-outs.
