GWS Giants vs Brisbane Lions Preview
The Lions take a trip to the nation’s capital looking to build on last week’s comfortable victory over North Melbourne.
Joe Daniher and Lachie Neale combined for a convincing 75-point win over the Shinboners, another thorough four-quarter performance on the back of an equally impressive win over Collingwood the week prior.
GWS, meanwhile, is coming off a hard-fought win over Hawthorn that warrants plenty of respect.
To be honest, the Hawks were the better team in the second half, but some late Harry Himmelberg heroics saw the Giants pick up their second win of the season in dramatic fashion.
Unfortunately, the Lions have been somewhat of a bogey team for Adam Kingsley’s men. Brisbane has won four straight over GWS dating back to the 2020 season, including a 40-point blowout at home last year.
That said, this could be a fascinating battle if the Giants can keep their turnovers to a minimum – something they’ve done quite well so far this year.
The Lions feasted off turnover against North last week to the tune of 116 points, but GWS currently sits below the league average in turnover – meaning Brisbane might have to go about things the old-fashioned way.
Where Brisbane could land the killer blow though is around the clearances. There hasn’t been a better team in this department than the Lions, while the same can’t be said for a Giants team that ranks 17th overall.
Better yet, the Lions continue to apply great pressure, which again, has been an issue for GWS at times against much lesser opponents.
It’s a tough road test in back-to-back weeks, but if their tackling is on point, I think Brisbane could win this quite well.
