GWS Giants vs Brisbane Lions Preview

This promises to be a cracking battle on Saturday night, with the Lions coming in with a dominant win over the Blues, while the Giants need to heal their wounds quickly from their harsh loss to the Swans.

It’s the first time the two teams have played at ENGIE Stadium since 2020, back in COVID times where the Lions got up, but it’s the Giants who won two out of two games against the Lions this season in Canberra and at the Gabba.

Taking the most recent encounter into discussion, it was the Lions who were simply inaccurate and wasted opportunities, 8.16 to the Giants 13.4.

What was most impressive about the Giants against the Swans was their structural efficiency, shutting down the Swans use of corridor movement and forcing slower and lower percentage plays.

The Lions were much similar against the Blues but just took the game on themselves, with a pressure rating so high, they made it impossible for the Blues to generate good looks forward of centre.

It makes for an interesting comparison when these two teams meet on Saturday night, with both midfields bringing the same tenacity as each other.

The key difference is running patterns in transition, with the Lions comfortable with territory by foot, whereas the Giants like to take care of it by hand a lot more.

The Giants punished the Swans with their ball use by foot so the Lions will need to find a way to adapt on a bigger ground.

Brisbane’s forward line was dynamic against the Blues and unpredictable which made them a threat at every inside 50 entry, but the Giants did struggle a lot more defensively when midfielders got involved on the scoreboard, which is something the Lions didn’t see a lot of last week.

The Giants second issue was their lack of defensive pressure on Sydney’s dominant runners, Chad Warner and Jake Lloyd, who amassed 1500 metres gained, helping to break open the game.

It’s hard to pinpoint where the Lions went wrong against the Blues, unhelped by the fact the foot was off the pedal with the game over early.

If you’re looking at energy levels and execution, the Lions should have the upper hand, but the Giants style stacks up better in finals.

Mentally the Giants will be challenged, but they haven’t had a home final since 2019, so they should get a good turnout to get them over the line.
