There’s plenty of footy left to play, but a win against the reigning premier will have done wonders for Carlton’s confidence this early on.

Charlie Curnow and Patrick Cripps were enormous last week in the win over the Cats, but overall, it was nice to see the Blues answer the bell just when it looked like Geelong was about to run all over them late in the final term.

The Giants, meanwhile, had no answer for West Coast in what became a 19-point defeat in the end.

GWS spent most of the game on the back foot, which almost had to be expected after battling 36-degree heat in a come-from-behind win over the Crows a week earlier.

On the plus side, the Giants’ forward line looks in great shape with Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan snagging big bags in both games, but Adam Kingsley has to be concerned about his club’s pressure rate given they currently rank 17th in tackles per-game.

As we saw against Adelaide last year, this is the kind of game Carlton might typically lose.

If they’ve truly matured and taken a step forward, they’ll come out and make a statement, but if they win by only a goal or two, more questions will be asked.

Fortunately for supporters, Carlton won both meetings against the Giants last year by 30 points or more, but they did go only 2-3 at the line as the away favourite.

Overall, neither side has been great around the clearances, so I think that’s where it will be won and lost. The Giants definitely have the talent up forward to impact the scoreboard, but lacking tackling, I think the Blues sneak home late through their superior midfield.
