GWS Giants vs Collingwood Magpies Preview
Adam Kingsley and the Giants have likely had this game circled on their calendar for a very long time.
A single point stood between themselves and Collingwood in last year’s epic Prelim Final, a game the orange men probably could have won if they found a way to compete with the Pies around the stoppages.
Despite the result, the Giants far exceeded expectations with many (including myself) tipping GWS to finish bottom four in Kingsley’s first year as coach.
Collingwood fans, on the other hand, will have to wait another week to celebrate last year’s flag with the AFL making the surprise decision to have two games in Sydney to kick off the year.
The Pies were basically heavy favourites to lift the Premiership cup from start to finish last year, and given the sheer depth and talent on Craig McRae’s roster, there’s a very realistic argument to be made for Collingwood being the next great dynasty to follow in Hawthorn and Richmond’s footsteps.
Until then, we’ll likely learn more about GWS in this opening game than Collingwood, and I am curious to see how this club responds to not only a Prelim heartbreak, but also the weight of expectations.
Twelve months ago the Giants were nobodies, but after a whirlwind season that included wins over Sydney, Melbourne, St Kilda, and Carlton, the future is suddenly looking very bright.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait an extra week to get a full taste of what the Giants can offer with Finn Callaghan and Harry Perryman both in doubt for this opening game.
The Pies, meanwhile, are relatively healthy, and in case you missed their preseason beat down over Richmond two weeks ago, it’s hard to find fault with a team that looked just as lethal as they did last year coming out of their back half.
I think GWS will be a force this year, but given their outs and the fact the Pies still look unstoppable, I’m happy to take Collingwood here at a good price.
