GWS ‘primed’ for Richmond AFL grand final

Coach Leon Cameron believes GWS’ preliminary final heart-stopper has primed his club perfectly for Saturday’s AFL grand final against Richmond.

Cameron’s Giants are seeking a breakthrough maiden premiership against the highly fancied Tigers at the MCG.

Temperatures of 16 degrees are forecast for Melbourne with no real threat of rain.

GWS fans will be outnumbered massively, with Richmond forming the bulk of the 100,000-strong crowd.

The Giants, after winning a semi-final battle against Brisbane by three points, pipped Collingwood by four points in a preliminary-final epic.

And Cameron believes last week’s win in front of a pro-Collingwood crowd has shown his players what to expect in the premiership decider against the Tigers.

“The last 20 minutes of last week, we were holding on for dear life a bit,” Cameron said.

“Clearly, the crowd was Collingwood-focused. And the roar from them for 20 minutes – it really held our boys in good stead.

“I mean, you don’t want to be trying to hold on and save the game for five or six minutes like we were last week.

“But in saying that, we have had probably six or seven close games this year and I think we have won six and lost one.”

While Richmond are raging favourites to win a second premiership in three seasons, Cameron says the Giants’ three wins in a stunning finals campaign give him great heart.

“It shows the maturity of the group that they can stay to structure when you do lose some control,” he said.

“Momentum is going to swing … you just got to make sure when you do get it, hopefully you can hit the scoreboard.

“We have shown in the last couple of weeks, when we have lost momentum, that we can play a more-dogged brand of footy.

“But we won’t want to be doing that for too long (against Richmond).”
