Hawthorn Hawks vs Adelaide Crows Preview
It’s a great time to be a lover of footy in South Australia.
The Crows have arguably been the most surprising team to start the young season, kicking off Gather Round with a triumphant 56-point win over Carlton last Thursday – a result that sealed their status as a serious finals contender.
Darcy Fogarty made a huge difference in his return to the forward line, but the headlines were largely dominated by young captain Jordan Dawson, who has since forced his way into the Brownlow conversation on the back of a monster game (37 disposals, six tackles, one goal).
A trip to Tassie is a difficult assignment for even the very best of flag contenders, but the Crows have to fancy their chances against a Hawthorn outfit that continues to play good footy in brief patches.
After finally winning a third quarter last week against the Giants, Sam Mitchell’s men crumbled in the final term, allowing a late Harry Himmelberg goal before Jarman Impey was ultimately denied a chance to seal the win by the very same man.
The absence of key midfielder Sam Day was felt throughout the game, and while young forward Fergus Greene continues to impress, it’s clear the Hawks are still struggling to make the most of their inside 50 entries.
Looking back, the Crows haven’t beaten Hawthorn in Tassie since 2005 though, not to mention the fact the Hawks have won seven of the last 10 meetings.
Say what you will about the Hawks and the wooden spoon, but they continue to show signs of improvement each week. Their ball movement was much more efficient for all four quarters against the Giants, reflective of their first half against Geelong the week prior. The fact Hawthorn also shut down Tom Green in the second half also bodes well.
The Crows’ forward line will be a real handful for Hawthorn’s young back half, but you can never discount Hawthorn pulling off an upset in Tassie.
