Hawthorn Hawks vs Brisbane Lions Preview
The Lions have spent an extra week reflecting on a loss to the Crows in Round 11, a game they’d probably like to have back.
Kicking 10 goals to 18 behinds cost Chris Fagan’s side a chance at an eighth straight win, but with the bottom half of the eight looking uncertain, the Lions still look a firm lock to finish somewhere in the top four.
Playing at the MCG has been the stuff of nightmares for Brisbane over the last decade, or at least that was the case before an epic Semi-Final win over the Demons last year.
Lions fans can also rest easy knowing they are facing the lowly Hawks, but after knocking off the Saints only two weeks ago, Fagan will be stressing the importance of not underestimating the opponent.
As they’ve done at times this year, Hawthorn was a complete no-show for three quarters against Port last week. James Sicily’s absence was felt, and although they showed signs of life in the final term, the Hawks still conceded a disappointing 55-point loss in the end.
Sporadic periods of good footy have become a common theme this year, which as we’ve seen, doesn’t cut it against the top flag contenders.
That said, the Hawks have held Brisbane’s number over the last three years winning as many games in succession. On paper, the Hawks don’t come close to matching Brisbane’s talent, but their aggressive run through the midfield could make this interesting if the Lions don’t take care of the footy.
Brisbane should come good in the end, but with Brisbane ranking 18th in tackles per game and 16th in disposals, the Hawks could make this a contest.
